Mapping on the web has significantly evolved in the past few years. Today an unthinkable amount of geographical data is publicly available and the tools for processing and visualizing have evolved to the level that they are easily accessible to the wider public.

During the presentation, Alex Barth will speak on the questions relating to the design of the most prominent maps that were recently developed, including mapping of Election data in Afghanistan, data on the NPR Census, maps of the Horn of Africa on One.org , and Climate for development by the World Bank. He will also explain how the maps were created and how they can be created faster and more visually appealing maps by using open source map design studio TileMill by MapBox. Additionaly, Alex will speak on the growing influence of maps through public distribution of content and about all things that must be taken into account when using geo-data.
